What is an ideal bath tub depth for use as a soaker and a walk in shower.?

we are putting in a new bathroom and want to buy a bath tub that will primarily be used as a shower stall.. meaning we have to step over the edge to get into it ? currently the one in our house is about 17 , but most these days are 20 '; is this going to be uncomfortabele/ dangerous ? can we lower the tub into the sub floorWhat is an ideal bath tub depth for use as a soaker and a walk in shower.?
Even a small step up and in can be dangerous because of the possability of slipping.. I ve tile many a tub w/ only a 14/15 in step up and over..I was led to believe from one of my builders that was the new norm for saftey.. Keep checking around and you ll find the lower style tub GLWhat is an ideal bath tub depth for use as a soaker and a walk in shower.?
If you haven't purchased the tub yet, you may consider getting a shower stall instead. You will enjoy the extra space in the bathroom for plants etc.

To answer your question: Dropping the tub to the sub-floor would strictly be a question of structural support, and without seeing what you have, its hard to give sound advice. I can't picture a way to do that with any gain. Besides, you still have to step out of the tub, so you only solve half the problem. Consider building a small step up if it is an issue stepping over the edge. A semi-circular step-up about 6'; adjacent to the tub base would not look offensive.
you can get a garden tub (used for soaking) with steps, or better yet, get a jacuzzi type tub or since it's a new bathroom, have a 36'; shower and separate tub like I have.
